Being the 3rd day of classes, as I began easing my students into an introduction of their first unit, I still am making time to try to build community amongst the students. Feedback from students has indicated that although they are a little nervous participating in community and team building activities at the start, they enjoy them once the game has started.
So, with that in mind, I had all three of my classes participate in People Bingo. This is a description from about.com:
“Almost everyone knows how to play Bingo (and many of us will always be able to sing the B-I-N-G-O! song, but that’s another thing).
People Bingo, sometimes called Human Bingo, is one of the best ice breakers for customizing for your particular group.
Come up with unusual traits and experiences belonging to your group if you know the people, or general traits if you don’t, and put them in the boxes of the Bingo card. Your students are charged with finding people in the room who match the traits. You can make it as easy or difficult as time allows.”
